How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Tea

Who are my tea drinking friends out there? Oh, and also my soon-to-be tea drinkers, after reading this blog post of course!

Have you ever wondered how to brew the perfect cup of tea? Well you’ve come to the right post!

I have been an avid tea drinker for thirty years, crazy how time flies! I remember drinking tea with my mom in the kitchen as a teenager and dipping chocolate chip cookies into it – oh the memories!

Now there are some who like green tea, some who enjoy herbal tea and many out there who enjoy a good cup of coffee. Me, I’m a black tea drinker through and through, and I always add a bit of milk and sugar. I think they refer to that as “British style.”

Anyway, for all you skeptics out there who prefer other caffeinated beverages, I’m here to convince you that this is one of the best cups of tea you’ll ever taste. So get ready, here comes the formula!

Step 1- Get Yourself a Good Teapot and Mug

First off you need a good teapot! No microwaving water here my friends! The tea just can’t brew correctly in a microwaved cup of water.

I found the one that I have right here for you, just in case you need to get one before proceeding! And just FYI, I use my own well water, but go ahead and use bottled if that is your preference!

Boil the water and wait for that tea kettle to whistle! Makes you think of the good old days doesn’t it? Now pour your water into your favorite mug!

As a self proclaimed tea expert, 😉 I also know all tea drinking mugs weren’t created equal! I ordered a set from amazon listed here, and I have to say these are pretty darn good mugs!

They don’t let the tea cool down too quickly, and are nice and big (17 ouncers). Also if your tea does cool a bit too much (who are my busy mamas out there), the handle does not get hot in the microwave during a re-heat! Which is a pretty big pet peeve of mine – hot handles after microwaving!

And they sure are pretty too! I purchased the white, but I also really like the grey and teal color choices!

Step 2- Brew Your British Style Black Tea

Okay, okay enough about mugs, on with the formula! Let’s talk types of tea. My absolute favorite black tea out there is listed here, and it’s not too pricey either!

I have tried many different types of black teas and this beats them all! I must admit I do treat myself to a chai tea from our local coffee shop from time to time, but my go-to, every-day tea is this Tetley British blend!

After pouring the water into your 17 ounce mug housing your tea, let that brew for a full 15 minutes – even set a timer if you need to! After 15 minutes the tea should be brewed enough so that when you add milk it won’t be too watered down.

It will also be at the perfect temperature for sipping after adding your milk and sugar! Seriously friends, I know this is a process, but bear with me!

Step 3- Brew for 15 Minutes & Add Sugar

Cup of tea and spoon

After waiting 15 minutes, place one slightly rounded tablespoon of sugar (not heaping) into your cup. I placed a pic as shown for reference.

Stir it around a bit and then take the tea bag out. First though, squeeze it out some to get that last bit of flavor! Plus, you won’t drip on your floor on the way to the garbage can! 😉

Step 4- Add Milk and Sip a Perfect Cup of Tea

Your final step is to add the milk. I use whole milk myself and the amount (if you are using the cup I recommended or even your own 17 ounce cup) is 1 ounce to 1.5 ounces.

I myself prefer 1 and 1/4 ounces of milk to give it that perfect color and flavor! Seriously folks, I know it seems like a lot of thinking and brewing and measuring goes into making the perfect cup of tea. But wait until you try it – so worth it!

I’ve condensed the steps down below for my skimmers out there! I’ve included the amazon affiliate links for the products I used for this tea tutorial! 😉
