Are you up for a cozy fall decor idea that’s both super easy to create and budget-friendly too? Well, read on, for a pom-pom flowers DIY that is easy step-by-step and made with Dollar Tree supplies. All you’ll need to have on hand are wire cutters and scissors.
So many different crafts can be made from pom-poms. I happened to have yarn in pretty fall colors including greige and rust tweed in my craft stash. I had previously purchased these skeins of yarn from Dollar Tree.
The texture that yarn gives to projects is so homey and I figured out a way to put this yarn to good use making some cozy fall decor.
And you really only need three other Dollar Tree supplies…a pom-pom maker, jute wire, and jute twine to complete this yarn thistle DIY.
As things usually go around here, a fail is what led me to make these yarn flowers in this particular fashion. I’ll tell ya about it below.
So, let’s create some fuzzy textured yarn thistle flowers together, shall we?

- Greige Tweed Yarn
- Jute Wire
- Jute Twine
- Pom Pom Maker
- Scissors
- Fork
- Wire Cutters
- Cardboard (optional)
Create the Yarn Pom Poms
First, I wrapped my yarn around each of the arms of the pom-pom maker about 65 times.
Close the pom-pom maker, making a circle.
Cut through the middle of the yarn all the way around the pom-pom maker.
Next, tie another piece of yarn around the middle of the pom-pom maker in the space provided.
And knot it tightly.
Then, pull the arms open.
And then pull the two pieces apart to release the pom-pom.
Trim the pom-pom with a pair of scissors to make it circular in shape and uniform.
I also made some smaller pom-poms using a fork. Some were wrapped 65 times, and the others were wrapped about 50 times around the fork so that the sizes varied slightly.
Use another piece of yarn threaded through the middle tines of the fork to tie off the pom-pom. Don’t knot it yet though.
You get a tighter knot if you slide the pom-pom off the fork and then tighten the yarn.
And then knot it tightly.
Use the scissors to cut all the way around the pom-pom.
Here it is before trimming around the edges.
Use the scissors to trim the pom-pom into a spherical shape.
Phew. I know that’s a lot of pictures guys, but it’s nice to see things step-by-step and the pictures help with that.
Now that the pom-poms are completed, let’s make them into thistle flowers.
Attach the Stem to the Pom-Pom Flowers
First, decide how long you want the stem to be and use the wire cutters to cut a piece of the jute wire from the roll.
I roughly measured mine using the vase I was planning to put the pom-pom flowers in.
Unravel a bit of the jute strings from the wire as shown below.
Find the central portion of the pom-pom where you tied it when you were making it.
Now poke the wire through the center of the pom-pom.
I told you in the beginning a fail was what made me make them in this fashion. Well, initially I was trying to poke the whole thing through the center, and it kept unraveling. 🫤
Well, after trying that a few times, I figured that they’d look more thistle-ish anyway if the jute twine kind of wrapped around the pom-pom.
And here we are.
Then bend the wire down around the center of the pom-pom so it’s secured to the jute wire stem.
Separate the jute strands out around the pom-pom, separating and pulling the strands apart a bit.
Now use the jute twine to make sure the jute wire doesn’t unravel down the length of the stem.
Tie the jute twine below the pom-pom flower.
Wrap the jute twine up and down the jute wire below your pom-pom.
After wrapping the jute twine around until the jute wire is secure, tie the end of it to the initial piece of the twine. Make a knot and then trim the ends of both strings.
This is how the pom-pom flower craft looks so far.
Next, you’ll use the scissors to trim the jute wire strands (as needed) to the length you like.
This is how the pom-pom thistle flower looks now. Okay, just one more step!
Bend the end of the jute wire a bit at the bottom.
Again, as before, tie the jute twine to the bottom of the jute wire.
Wrap it around and around the end of the stem and then secure it by tying the end to the initial piece of twine. Make a knot and clip the excess with scissors.
This step simply makes the bottom look more finished and hides the wire.
Here are the three pom-pom flowers with stems attached, in different sizes.
The largest one was made with the pom-pom maker, and the two smaller ones were made with a fork (the larger one was wrapped 65 times, and the smaller one was wrapped 50 times).
I also made some rust-colored pom poms in different sizes. You can find that rust-tweed colored yarn here.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to buy a pom-pom maker, you can make a similar large pom-pom with a 2-inch-wide piece of cardboard with a slit in the center.
I wrapped the yarn about 80 times around the cardboard. You could probably get away with 65-70 wraps because this one turned out denser than the one that I made with the pom-pom maker.
Like with the fork, tie another piece of string around the pom-pom using the slit in the cardboard.
Remove the pom-pom from the cardboard, tie the string tighter, and knot it.
Using the scissors, cut all the way around the pom-pom.
After you trim this guy up, your pom-pom is complete!
This is how the pom-poms compare. The one on the left is made with the pom-pom maker and the one on the right is made with the cardboard.
Repeat the process that was described above to add stems to the rust-colored pom-poms
And this is how these pom-pom flowers ended up looking!
Finishing Up this Cozy Fall Pom-Pom Flower Tutorial
Do you think these yarn pom-pom flowers go well with cozy fall decor?
They are super easy to make and only require a few supplies from Dollar Tree. This also makes them budget-friendly.
And Dollar Tree has all different colors of yarn.
I used fall colors, but you could easily customize this pom-pom flower craft for all different seasons by varying the color of your yarn.
The jute wire strands give a nice thistle-like touch to these flowers. So, in the end, I’m glad that the jute wire wouldn’t push through the pom-pom. 😉
And the wire is flexible enough to position the pom-pom flowers any way you want, but also strong enough to hold the pom-poms up.
As always, thanks so much for reading. Leave any questions and comments down below and I’ll get right back to ya.
Now it’s time to hit up the local Dollar Tree and grab yarn, jute wire, jute twine, and maybe a pom-pom maker. And craft a few pom-pom flowers perfect for cozy fall decor.
