Wood Heart Ornaments DIY for Rustic Valentine Decor

These Valentine’s Day ornaments are simple to make with wood heart cut-outs, paint and Rub n’ Buff. Just add a twig tree or your favorite faux floral branches and you’re all set!

I had a bunch of wood hearts leftover from a heart and wood bead wreath that I had made a few years ago.

So, I decided to put them to use and make a Valentine’s Day twig tree with rustic painted wooden hearts and jute twine.

Guys! These wood hearts even come with the twine, so you don’t have to buy that separately.

Just a little bit of my favorite craft paint and everyone’s staple craft supply, Rub n’ Buff, and this easy wooden heart craft comes together in a jiffy.

But read until the end, where we personalize these ornaments making them even more special for the upcoming day of love!

On to the tutorial for this painted wood heart craft idea with a touch of gold.

Supply List for Wood Heart Craft

Supplies including wood hearts, twine, paint, rub n' buff, scissors and craft paintbrushes.

Paint the Wood Heart Cut-Outs

Using the craft paint in the colors Burnt Umber and Antique Parchment, paint your wood hearts.

Paint the wood heart, and then immediately wipe the paint off with a paper towel. This will allow you to see the wood grain through the paint.

Wipe off the excess paint immediately using a paper towel.

Continue this with each of the wood hearts, making as many as you want for your twig tree. I decided to make half with the cream-colored paint and half with the brown.

I allowed one side to dry for about a half an hour before painting the other side.

Apply Rub n’ Buff to the Edges of the Heart

Next, using a very small amount of Rub n’ Buff and a craft paintbrush, gently brush the edges of the heart with gold.

Make sure there are no clumps of Rub n’ Buff on your brush before applying. You can blot it off on paper first to check.

Brush a small amount of gold Rub n' Buff onto the edges of the heart.

Attach Jute Twine to Hang the Wood Hearts

Next, we’ll just attach a jute twine hanger to our hearts. Here’s how I attached them.

Cut a small length of jute twine.

Double the twine and poke the connected end through the hole in the heart.

Then, thread the free ends through the loop.

And pull the twine tight!

And that’s it…all that’s left to do is hang them up!

You can grab a tree branch from outside or use faux stems. These pussy willow stems are from Hobby Lobby.

And here’s how they look with a branch from the yard.

But wait, just one more thing!

Personalize the Rustic Wooden Heart Ornaments

One more idea for these cute little ornaments is to personalize them with words that make you think of love.

I put the word “home” on mine, and had the kids come up with a few words that made them think or feel loved as well.

These metallic Sharpie pens came in handy for writing the words on our hearts.

Final Thoughts on this Painted Wooden Heart Ornament DIY

Do you guys think this is a craft idea you’d like to try?

What’s great is you can put these wood hearts to use for this project plus a few more. Both this embroidery hoop Valentine’s Day wreath and this heart and wood bead garland use these small wooden hearts.

And these hearts come with the jute twine included, which makes this craft budget friendly.

I like that the hearts are rustic and neutral so they can blend in with all sorts of decor!

If you have a few faux stems to use that’s great, but if not, just go grab a branch from the yard! I grabbed one of my Dappled Willow shrub branches since they are slender.

And you can personalize them by adding words that come to your mind when you think of love, making them a sentimental part of your home decor. 🤎

As always, thanks so much for reading! Any questions, post them down in the comments section.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
