This reindeer yarn craft is made with Dollar Tree supplies and is super easy and cute to make with the kiddos for Christmas.
Wow, the holidays sure seem to fly by, don’t they? Just 3 weeks until Christmas!?
Fortunately, this reindeer craft is super easy to make and might be perfect for a last-minute homemade Christmas gift.
This is a great adult Christmas craft, or you can make these with the help of the kiddos. I helped my kids with assembling the body and then they wrapped the reindeer with yarn and hot glued the bead eyes on.
So, this is definitely a craft you can make together for Christmas! Most of the supplies can be found at Dollar Tree making this DIY budget-friendly too.
So, let’s get to this before Christmas is upon us. 😉 Read on for the tutorial on how to make these cute and rustic yarn wrapped reindeer.

Supplies for Christmas Yarn Craft
- Yarn
- Large Craft Sticks
- Small Craft Sticks
- Clothespins
- Glue Gun
- Glue Sticks
- Wire Cutters
- Pipe cleaners (fuzzy sticks)
- Beads for eyes
All supplies were purchased at Dollar Tree except the glue gun, wire cutters and pipe cleaners. And these particular pipe cleaners were purchased at Walmart.
Cut Large Craft Stick to Make Body and Neck
Attach the two clothespins to the large craft stick to get an idea of how large to make the body.
Now cut the large craft stick to make the neck and body using the wire cutters or sharp pair of scissors.
For reference, the body was about 3.75 inches, and the neck was a little over 2 inches.
Glue the neck to the body with the hot glue gun.
Cut the Small Craft Stick to Make the Head and Tail
Get an idea of how large you want the head of the deer and cut the small craft stick using the wire cutters.
Then clip off the other end to make the tail.
Hot glue the head and the tail onto the reindeer body.
Make the Antlers Using Pipe Cleaners
First twist the pipe cleaners around the top of the head. Try to make the two sides relatively even on both sides.
Next twist the pipe cleaners into antler shapes.
Hot glue them onto the head for some stability so that they don’t fall off when you are wrapping the yarn.
Tie the Yarn to the Deer and Begin Wrapping
Tie the yarn to the body of the reindeer and begin wrapping your brown yarn.
Wrap it in figure 8 and crossover pattern to wrap it around the tail. Hold it taught as you wrap it especially around the tail area. If it comes loose you can fix it with a bit of hot glue.
Begin wrapping it down the legs. When you get to the point where they branch off, wrap it down one leg. And then the other.
Allow a piece of the clothespin to show at the bottom for the hoof and to allow it to stand more easily.
Wrap it around the body to fill it out and then wrap the chest and front legs. Wrap it in different directions to cover up all the popsicle stick wood.
Now move on up the neck to the head.
As you wrap it around the antlers you’ll want to go over top the middle part of the antler to hold it in place.
Now wrap down the nose. There will be a little tip of popsicle stick poking out. I left mine as is, but you could also paint that part.
Finish up by wrapping any areas that need to be filled out and make sure the popsicle sticks are completely covered.
Finally cut the yarn and hot glue it under the belly to hide it.
Attach the Bead Eyes with Hot Glue
Attach the bead eyes with hot glue. I only had white, but I think they sell other colors at Dollar Tree.
The kids said they looked like zombie deer. 😉
And that’s a wrap. Literally and figuratively since we made yarn wrapped reindeer!
Update: I ended up making another reindeer with the head pointing down to go with my first one. This is how I glued the popsicle sticks together for the second reindeer.
Finishing Up this Reindeer Yarn Craft
So, what do you think about these DIY yarn wrapped reindeer?
I found three different shades of brown yarn at Dollar Tree to make these reindeer. And you may even have some already on hand if you like yarn crafts.
I do have to say that because the clothespin doesn’t have a wide base of support, they can tip over pretty easily.
I think they are super cute though and you could even use them as part of your Christmas shelf decor.
Or even make them with the kiddos and give them away as homemade Christmas gifts for friends and family.
This is also an inexpensive DIY idea since you can make a bunch using the popsicle sticks, clothespins, yarn and a package of pipe cleaners.
