Spackle Art Heart on Canvas DIY

Create this super easy textured heart art DIY for Valentine’s Day decor with a few simple supplies.

I love the texture and three-dimensional look of spackle art. This is my first try at spackle painting and I’m really liking the process.

Can’t wait to try more of this! Do you like spackle painting too?

I decided to use an inexpensive canvas from Dollar Tree, and I had a container of spackle already on hand.

A free printable of three hearts in varying sizes made the job even easier.

This cute piece of decor is great for shelf decor or to hang on a wall with command strips.

Supplies for Textured Heart Art DIY

Supplies including free printable, paint, canvas, craft stick, and spackle.
  • Spackle
  • Free Printable
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Craft stick (I ended up using the small popsicle stick kind)
  • Canvas
  • Mod Podge (not pictured)

I picked up the canvas and craft sticks at Dollar Tree. The mod podge, paintbrushes, craft paint and spackle can be found at Walmart or Amazon.

Paint the Canvas

First off, paint the canvas. The paint color I used was called Metallic Rose Gold craft paint by Folk Art.

The paintbrushes came in a set and were called stencil brushes, but you can use any that you have on hand.

Paint in horizontal strokes across the canvas. I liked that you could see the brush strokes. Paint the sides as well.

Transfer the Hearts to the Canvas

Place the printable shaded side down onto the canvas. Position it where you want the hearts to be located on the canvas.

Now take the pencil and run it over each of the hearts.

The pressure will lightly transfer the heart shape onto the canvas.

This will give you a heart template for your spackle.

Place the printable shaded side down onto the canvas and then use a pencil to color in each of the hearts.

Spackle the Heart Shapes onto the Canvas

Use the popsicle stick to paint the spackle onto the canvas. You may have to press it gently with the craft stick to get it to adhere.

Apply spackle to the canvas using the pencil shading as an outline.

Continue with each heart shape. Here are a few pics of the process.

The smaller ones were a little trickier. For any smudges just wipe off the popsicle stick and gently scrape and press the spackle into the heart shape.

Third heart spackled onto the canvas.

Use a clean popsicle stick to scrape and press it to reduce spackle smudges.

Once you have the three hearts completed on the canvas, gently go over the hearts to smooth them out a bit.

Not too much though! Since we love that textured look.

Smooth the spackle a little after the three hearts are on the canvas.

Optional- Paint the Hearts

Allow the spackle to dry. The canister says 24 hours, but I ended up waiting 2 days simply because some days are busier than others!

I wasn’t happy with the stark white appearance of the hearts, so I decided to use a little Antique Parchment craft paint on them.

If you agree, use a tiny craft paintbrush with a little paint on it and simply paint over the spackle.

I didn’t paint the sides of the spackled hearts, just brushed some paint over the top of them. This way you don’t have to worry about getting any on the canvas.

Allow the paint to dry, then proceed to the next step!

Apply Mod Podge Over Entire Canvas

The final step is to apply mod podge over the spackle hearts and painted canvas.

I used a cheap chippy brush to apply the mod podge and am hoping that this prevents the spackle from becoming brittle and flaking off.

Using a small amount of mod podge, brush it on and gently smooth out any of the thicker areas.
