Creative Kids’ Art Display Idea for Your Home

Do your kids love to create artwork? Mine love to play video games. Haha 😉 But they’ll also do a craft or two with dear old mom every once in a while.

They all have a small booklet of watercolor paper along with watercolor pens that they use when the mood strikes. So, I gave them the task of creating any beach scene they wanted to display in the powder room.

I already had a shell picture that my husband’s aunt had given us. She had taken a class in Washington D.C. on shell art and used to make the most beautiful shell flowers. And this particular picture was one of her creations.

I was looking for some artwork to display around it to go with the theme and I always enjoy displaying my kids’ art projects in different areas around the house.

To complete the display, I found a metal nautical compass to go with the rest of the beach themed pictures.

Read on for the easy tutorial to create some neat wall decor to hang in your home courtesy of your own little artists.

Supplies for Unique Wall Decor Idea

Stain the Wood Frames

Pick which frames you want to use to display the artwork. I stained mine with Antique Stripped Pine wood stain using a small paintbrush, then allowed them to dry.

Create the Artwork for Your Display

Place the frame onto the watercolor paper and trace a thin line around the inside portion of the frame. This will give the kids an idea of how large a painting to create.

We used watercolor pens and a small watercolor book to make our artwork.

First, we drew the pictures with a pencil and then used the watercolor pens to paint everything in.

I love the way watercolor paint blends in with the use of the water pens into a perfectly imperfect picture. If you’ve never used watercolor pens before there are lots of tutorials on YouTube.

Cut your Picture to Fit in the Frame

First center the picture where you want it inside the frame.

Hold it there and turn it over. Then, hold it up to a window and trace a line around the edge of the frame so that you’ll be able to glue it onto the frame, but small enough so that you don’t see the paper where the designs are.

Cut it out and turn it over to make sure the picture isn’t showing through the designs in the front.

Glue the Watercolor Picture to the Frame

Next, use your tacky dot runner to place glue along the inside edge of the frame where you’ll connect your picture.

Connect your watercolor picture to the frame.

Use Mounting Dots to Hang Your Pictures

Finally, it’s time to hang up those creative works of art. Use the mounting dots and secure them to the back of the frames.

Two dots worked for the circular frames; however, I ended up using 4 dots for the rectangular ones because they were a bit heavier.

Display Your Creative Kids’ Art

Finally, display your kids’ watercolor art paintings. I did a coastal theme in the bathroom since I already had the homemade shell picture.
